Shrimp of the Woods

I found a mushroom under a log that was perfect and beautiful. Next to this mushroom was something that looked like a sponge ball. I took both home to study and try to figure what type of mushrooms they were.

After researching online blogs, pictures, and notes. I came to the conclusion that I found shrimp of the woods. They earned their name because they have a particularsmell of shrimp when they are cooking, and the texture is similar to shrimp as well.

I brought them home and I washed them in the sink in the kitchen, and let me tell you that it is a lot of work to clean a couple pounds of these mushrooms. But I believe that it is worth it.  

After cleaning my mushrooms, I started to think about how to cook them. An idea came to my mind: “Camarones al ajillo”.

Here is the recipe for it:


Mushrooms  2 cups

Garlic  1 teaspoon

Chili flakes1 pinch

Olive oil2 tablespoon

White wine ½ cup

Salt & pepper


Put the oil, garlic and chili flakes in a hot pan, and sauté until the garlic starts to get golden brown.

Add the mushrooms and caramelize them.

Deglaze with wine and season with salt and pepper.

Serve with toast to soak up the flavorful oil at the bottom of the plate.
